This lovely old Grade II Listed building was probably built around 1570 but we have no evidence yet. It takes a lot of time and effort searching through the archives to find any concrete evidence that can be attached to a particular house. You normally need to know names or people living there, and even then there ay not be any significant events attached to it at all. It is surprising where related information does come from – someone else’s Will for example. You have to keep searching!
The 1843 Tithe map and Schedule for Deal Parish is the first ‘address’ we can be certain of as the numbered property has named owner and occupier. Houses do not move, so we know exactly where it is! The census record can be misleading as this house was not numbered until after 1911, and even then streets can be re numbered, even renamed. There is quite a bit of detective work involved. Having a long occupation is good as the 1911 census generally locates the property quite well. This can be tied in to street indexes and then worked back to earlier times.
There are rumours that Oliver Cromwell stayed there and at one time it was a pub called ‘The Crown’.
Number 1 and 2 (combined)
The early records indicate these were one property. Tithe 1834 owner occupier was Mary Hills. The schedule reference is 130a which means the property numbering allocation was made years before, and carried through from schedule to schedule. It was split into two properties some time before 1898. Further research needed!
