Correction! It is the 1801 printing and does not show any of the turnpike! Follow the tortuous route to Sandwich through Sholden, Finglesham, Ham and Sandwich. This was the first accurate printed map. Scale is 1 inch to 1 mile.

Another printed version of Mudge's map has come to light. It is digitised at high resolution from an 1810 printing. This becomes the earliest printed version. The 1815? sketched version has more alterations on it due to Napoleonic effects. Go to http://archivemaps.com and search for 'Deal'. It is used as the front cover for the book 'Map of a Nation - a biography of the Ordnance Survey' by Rachel Hewitt. This map does not have the 'Middle Deal Bypass'!
